Halloway’s position is that damage is informative: the changes a copy carries are often the most reliable evidence available about where it came from. She teaches the reconstruction weeks and marks hardest on the gap between what a student observed and what they inferred from it.
She does not think every question has an answer. A workshop conclusion of “the evidence does not separate these two histories” is the result she is happiest to see defended well.
