The Chain
Investigate one artefact through ten documented copying steps, and report what each step changed in measurements someone else could reproduce.
Due: 26 March 2027 ยท Weight: 20%
Choose a copying process. Put one artefact through ten documented steps of it, and report what each step changed.
Due 12:00, Friday 26 March 2027 (Canberra time). About 8โ10 hours.
What you submit#
The original and ten outputs, a settings log, a measurement table, the prediction you recorded before you started, and a 600-word analysis.
Keep the original. Include a control that isolates something your measurement might otherwise be blamed on. A finding of no measurable change is a valid result and is marked as one โ the exact-copy control in week 1 exists to make that point early.
You may use a process demonstrated in a workshop, provided you pose your own comparison. You are not required to invent a new technology or acquire equipment, and no premium is awarded for expensive apparatus or dramatic degradation.
The prediction#
Record what you expect to lose before you run anything. The mark rewards comparing that expectation honestly with what happened. A prediction quietly revised after seeing the result scores nothing on that criterion.
Extensions, late work and declaration of tools: see the course policies.
The spec
The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.
- another person could repeat your comparison from the files and settings you submit
- your control isolates at least one competing explanation
- your recorded prediction is compared with the result, not rewritten to match it
How it is marked
| Criterion | Weight |
|---|---|
| Reproducibility | 35% |
| Measurement and controls | 30% |
| Evidence interpretation | 25% |
| Prediction and reflection | 10% |
