Generation Checks
Twelve five-minute evidence responses, one at the start of each workshop, marked on your reasoning rather than on getting the answer right.
Due: 19 May 2027 · Weight: 10%
Here is some evidence. Say what it supports, and say how you know.
The first five minutes of every Wednesday workshop, weeks 1 to 12. The date above is when the series ends — the final check on Wednesday 19 May 2027 — not a separate submission deadline.
How it works#
Each check gives you prepared evidence and one question. You will never be asked to complete an experiment in five minutes.
Scoring is 0–4: 2 points for citing relevant evidence, 1 point for a defensible interpretation of it, 1 point for naming a material limitation or an alternative your answer does not rule out.
A correct guess with no evidence earns at most the interpretation point. A wrong final choice does not erase valid reasoning. An indicative answer and explanation are published after each check.
Best ten of twelve#
Your best ten scores count, so two missed checks cost nothing. An uncompleted check scores zero before the lowest two are dropped. Approved absences beyond that are handled under the course policies, which also cover extensions, late work and declaration of tools.
Weeks 1 to 9 mostly exercise evidence reasoning; weeks 10 to 12 add evaluation of preservation and restoration claims.
The spec
The brief poses the problem and leaves room for a response. The spec is the fixed part: what a marker checks. Some lines can be checked mechanically; the rest call for judgement.
- you cite the specific evidence you reasoned from, not the conclusion alone
- you name one limitation or alternative your answer does not settle
- a wrong final choice with sound reasoning still earns most of the marks
How it is marked
Each check earns 0–4 raw points — 2 for relevant evidence, 1 for a defensible interpretation, 1 for a material limitation or alternative. The best ten of twelve count, and your course contribution is the sum of those ten divided by 40 and scaled to 10 percentage points.
