Building the mechanism on paper#
SLOP3733 · Week 4#
The problem, as narrowly as I can state it#
You sit down for thirty minutes. Perhaps fifteen of them are real.
The other fifteen are not spent on your phone. They are worse than that: spent at the desk, looking at the work, not advancing, in a slack and slightly unwilling state that does not feel like rest and does not produce anything.
In a ranked match that state does not exist#
Not because you are more disciplined in a game.
Because the game will not let thirty seconds pass without telling you what the next thirty seconds are for.
So build that, out of paper#
One sheet, four parts, filled in#
A win condition, written before you start#
One sentence, and a stranger has to be able to check it.
Work on the assignment is not one. Two body paragraphs drafted, however bad is.
This is the single highest-value line on the page, and most people get it wrong for a fortnight.
A wave clock#
Something short and recurring that forces a decision. Five minutes is a reasonable default.
At each tick, one word: continue, switch, or stuck.
Its job is not to measure anything. Its job is to make sure you cannot drift for eleven minutes without noticing.
One scheduled objective#
A single contestable moment inside the block, set in advance: at minute eighteen you will have the thing in a state you could show someone.
Objectives work in a MOBA because everyone can see the clock. They work here for the same reason — the ten minutes before one have a shape.
A verdict#
At the end you write W or L.
You decide, and you decide against the win condition you wrote at the start — not against how the half hour felt.
If your sheet has a header, a mood field and a reflection box, you have built ceremony.
And ceremony is what gets abandoned in week two.
The anti-goal, and it is not optional#
The paper version must be runnable in about eight seconds of writing.
There is a stronger version of this warning, and it comes from having got it wrong: be suspicious of any mechanism that would make you feel like a strange person if somebody walked in on you doing it.
Study is hard enough without also performing being a fanatic about it. If it looks deranged, it will not survive contact with your actual life, and it should not.
This week#
Run it for five sittings before week 5.
Bring the sheets. Including the ones where you wrote L — especially those, and if none of them says L we are going to want to talk about your win conditions.
