SLOP6251 · Consultation Case 01
A Quiet Change at Breakfast
Pepper is still eating, playing and using the litter box. Four unfinished breakfasts are still a change worth describing.
A transfer case: use the method you learned with Milo in a household you have not met before.
01The problem
The bowl is not empty anymore
Pepper is a six-year-old cat who usually finishes breakfast within twenty minutes. For four mornings she has left roughly half. Her evening play, drinking and litter-box pattern appear unchanged. One caregiver says the new work roster moved breakfast earlier; another says Pepper is simply becoming fussy.
Neither explanation has been tested. There is no known urgent signature in the case file, but “not an emergency” does not answer what the household should do next.
02Observe
Remove the explanation for one minute
Write what changed, for how long, and what remained normal.
03Reason
Run the four steps in order
A plausible explanation earns a test, not automatic acceptance.
Baseline → change → urgency → explanation and direction
Pepper’s usual meal completion gives the comparison. Four mornings establish persistence, while normal play and litter use help describe the wider pattern without cancelling the appetite change. Check known urgent signatures before testing the schedule explanation. Then ask whether returning to the established feeding time brings the pattern back toward baseline. If it does not, or the change worsens, the case moves into a veterinary conversation rather than indefinite waiting.
04Evidence
The method is a disclosed synthesis
Its value comes from disciplined order, not from pretending one guideline names these exact four steps.
05Decide
Choose the next step, not the final explanation
06Care plan
Leave the household with an endpoint
The plan should still make sense tomorrow, including if the explanation turns out to be wrong.
- 01
Preserve the four-day record
Keep amount, timing, duration and the unchanged behaviours together so the pattern can be compared accurately.

- 02
Test the schedule explanation
Return to the established feeding time and observe whether Pepper moves back toward her own baseline.

- 03
Name the monitoring endpoint
If the appetite change persists, worsens or gains other signs, raise the complete pattern with a veterinarian rather than extending wait-and-see indefinitely.

Keep urgent signatures separate
A known time-sensitive pattern would override this measured test and require immediate professional help.
