When should I not engage?#
Week 8
A hero who cannot act is worth nothing#
Every week so far has been about acquiring something.
This one is about what happens when you cannot use any of it.
Control turns a strong position into a lost fight — and like everything else here, it is bought and sold.
Why the question is negative#
Beginners lose most of their games to fights that were decided before they started.
Recognising that shape is worth more right now than winning the fights themselves.
The habit this week breaks#
Spending a control spell the moment it comes off cooldown.
Or buying a Black King Bar and walking into five people, believing you are invulnerable.
What does it forbid?#
Kinds of control#
Stuns. Roots. Silences. Hexes.
What each one forbids matters far more than how long it lasts.
Dispels#
Some control can be removed. Some cannot.
That difference decides whether you owe an item slot to a dispel.
Spell immunity is not invulnerability.
It means: for this window, part of their toolkit does not apply to me. Knowing which part is the whole skill.
Physical and magical#
They need different answers.
Buy the wrong answer, and it feels like you bought nothing at all.
Holding is a threat#
The real subject: when not to open#
The first instinct on getting a control spell is to spend it.
But much of its value is the enemy having to account for it while you are still holding it.
Seconds of certainty#
In a game where everyone is gambling, a Black King Bar buys certainty.
It is the purest thing money can buy here — gold traded for something that is not gold.
This week’s hero#
Sand King — Burrowstrike
An opening tool, used to teach the opposite of opening.
That is the week’s structure, not an accident of hero choice.
This week’s items#
Black King Bar buys your own certainty.
Glimmer Cape buys somebody else’s — your gold, a teammate’s survival.
Same question as week 6’s Arcane Boots: who does the benefit belong to?
After this week#
Describe a time you meant to open and did not, and why.
Look at the enemy lineup and say whether you need a Black King Bar.
Tell a fight lost to control from one lost to standing in the wrong place.
Lobby Lab 8#
Hold the stun.
