# SLOP4408 — Week 12: Recover the Impossible

Campus / printable lab pack · Semester 1, 2027

## The task

Complete Operation Last Light and explain why selected checks and performed actions serve the team's declared objective.

In-person teaching is preferred. The paper route is a complete conceptual activity when apparatus is unavailable; online students use the equivalent controls and keep the same learning record.

The investigation, experiment, agreement or revision is this week's practical output. A staged field handover is optional and cannot replace the reasoning record.

## Learning outcomes

- Select and justify capabilities relevant to the declared objective.
- Coordinate dependencies and preserve evidence when the approach changes.
- Defend the performed result, a credible alternative and a remaining obligation.

## Equipment

The full published mission pack, role sheets, previous lab props or equivalent cards, and the resolution checklist. A single shared browser or printed tabletop map can serve the group.

## Facilitator setup

Lay out the six station areas, publish the chosen preset and assign roles. Keep rule sheets accessible. Use the same resolution requirements for browser and campus routes.

## Complete supplied rules

**MR-01** supplies the Meridian charter, six areas and four responsibilities. **MR-02** supplies approach-specific requirements; use the final-project pack for current profiles and evidence.

- Shared evidence: scene/identity observations, current signed archive source, precise handoff, preservation/recipient agreement, initial plan and preserved revision.
- Physical recovery: matched support cradle, map orientation and transport route. An Upper/Lift route also needs power; the independent Service route does not impose a circuit gate.
- Digital recovery: diagnosed transmission supply, correct local access policy, confirmed receiving receipt and arrangements for the original. Cradle, map and transport are not required.
- Stabilisation and handover: matched support cradle, diagnosed continuous power, stable indicator, named custodian and monitoring limitation. No transport route or access-policy gate.
- Explain a credible alternative, why your selected checks fit the objective, and a remaining obligation. Recall is an optional tool, not a universal gate.
- Locations: arrival hall, workshop, power bay, control room, archive chamber, dispatch platform. Roles: observer/navigator, systems specialist, investigator, coordinator.
- Presets: Baseline, Equipment Failure, Conflicting Archive. They are published conditions; acting speed and endings do not determine marks.

## Two-hour schedule

These are the teaching session's time blocks, not six compulsory game objectives. Adjust timing as needed; reasoning matters more than speed.

| Time | Activity |
| --- | --- |
| 0–10 minutes | Agree objective and responsibilities; distinguish shared and approach-specific requirements. |
| 10–30 minutes | Compare the alternate mission with your charter and identify a choice it cannot supply. |
| 30–60 minutes | Perform or inspect the chosen attempt, recording each consequential action's support. |
| 60–80 minutes | Challenge the plan from another role and inspect a contrasting rehearsal. |
| 80–105 minutes | Prepare the account: relevant and omitted checks, alternative and remaining obligation. |
| 105–120 minutes | Give individual defences and assemble the final bundle and backup. |

## Worked example · a different scenario

The separate rainfall-recorder example aims to recover verified data while keeping the original recorder stable. The demonstrator records a 16:25 display and an amber service lamp, tests the prepared support lift for two opposite output turns, and compares copies with the twelve-record W-6 request. Ash matches; Birch does not. A confirmed handoff transfers Ash while the recorder stays at its mast. The result meets the stated objective, but matching a reference does not answer the remaining calibration question.

[Watch this separate example and inspect its finished record](/demonstrations/lab-12/).

The example explains a method. Its completed decisions are not the assigned task. Use the materials above for your own choices.

## Practice

Use an explicitly labelled rehearsal or completed run and map checks to its chosen objective.

## Skill check

Have another role challenge a decision and explain a credible alternative using the current charter.

## Transfer challenge

Compare a contrasting preset and objective if relevant. Preserve both plans and explain the actual decision changed.

## Student record

**Named output: recovery-record.**

Keep objective, relevant requirements, handoffs, performed evidence, contrasting rehearsal and revision. Explain one justified omission, alternative and remaining obligation.

Record your name/role, phase and scenario, prediction before action, evidence requested, result, decision, alternative and remaining uncertainty. Include assistance, format used and any physical-model limitation. Keep a failed attempt that explains a revision.

The investigation, experiment, agreement or revision is this week's practical output. A staged field handover is optional and cannot replace the reasoning record.

## Explanation — reveal after an attempt

The debrief reports the requirements met, missing evidence and unresolved assumptions. A successful ending with unsupported reasoning is not automatically strong academic work. A carefully diagnosed incomplete recovery can still demonstrate substantial skill, while clearly acknowledging what was not achieved.

A facilitator judges the reasoning. The record's existence and the model's successful result do not by themselves establish learning.

## Facilitator evidence cards · reveal on request

Apply the final mission pack's current conditional requirements. Shared evidence is required for every approach; add the checks relevant to the selected approach and physical route. Do not invent an eleven-skill gate. Require an honest explanation of relevant omissions and remaining obligations. The facilitator checks authored model conditions; individual reasoning remains part of the assessment defence.

The full pack remains available for accessible and solo study. Label assistance if you inspected all cards before choosing a test. No hidden rules or secret grading are involved.

## Reflection and later use

What would you now teach your Week 1 self about becoming capable?

This lab assembles the final-project evidence. The after-action account does not replace the performed mission or the assessment's individual and team deliverables.

## Evidence and limitations

Save **recovery-record** with your explanation. Physical activities are proposed teaching designs, not hardware-tested equipment. Distinguish model-card results from actual measurements. Neither browser success nor paper completion establishes physical dexterity or classroom enjoyment. A dated station record is sufficient; a duplicate browser run is not required.
