# A1 — The Sealed Workshop: campus trial

Individual · 20% · due 19 March 2027, 17:00 Canberra time.

## Challenge

Investigate a carriage that cannot yet make a justified transfer. Choose inspections and tests that distinguish an incorrect movement ratio, an orientation mistake and a holding condition. Predict before changing a component. Keep the first result, including failures.

In-person is preferred. Use labelled paper models or supplied apparatus; an additional browser run is not required. Do not claim physical apparatus validation from a paper result.

## Supplied information and controls

- Arrival inventory: bronze lens in the left mount; blue spool below the navigation board; white tile beside the manifest.
- Packing manifest: lens → spool → tile. Written notes are permitted; recall is an optional information aid.
- Transport map: north is rotated 90° clockwise from the entrance. Use world direction, not where your body or camera faces.
- Carriage: 12-tooth driver; available followers 24, 36, 48 teeth; required opposite-direction output is half the input speed.
- Governing rule: output turns = driver teeth ÷ follower teeth × input turns. A holding brake can block movement. The initial model has a 36-tooth follower and engaged brake.

Available actions are Inspect, select follower, engage/release brake, turn input once and test orientation. A facilitator supplies the observed result of the requested action using the governing model. The facilitator does not choose your next test or repair.

## Independent investigation record

Before each consequential action write:
1. Which explanations remain plausible?
2. What result do you predict?
3. Which result would make you change your explanation?
4. What actually happened, and what does it establish?

When the evidence supports release, collect the workshop case token and move through Workshop threshold → Orientation turn → Receiving lane. Hand it to the receiving point. Record its release and receipt; a working gear alone is not delivery.

## Detailed skill and transfer evidence

Attach the Week 1 observation/classification record, Week 2 comparison of information aids, Week 3 connector prediction and Week 4 full mechanism checks. These supplied lab records establish detailed capabilities beyond the compact workshop model.

For transfer, use an assigned changed-condition lab case. Identify the relationship that changed, choose a new test and preserve the earlier prediction. Explain why copying the original configuration is insufficient. Do not copy the botanical worked example's calculation.

## Submission and feedback

Submit your event trace, causal model, 350–500-word explanation and attribution. Explain two consequential decisions, a changed-situation response and a limitation. Justify when memory helped or when notes were more dependable; recollection is not intrinsically better.

Use the published rubric. The conceptual checks establish practice evidence; a person assesses diagnosis, transfer and explanation. Hints and reading the worked explanation remain available when declared.
