Involution 101

Geertz’s Rice Paddies

The word

Involution (n.): a system absorbing more and more labour, more and more elaboration — without producing more output.

Not stagnation. Not growth. A third thing.

Clifford Geertz, Java, 1963

Wet-rice (sawah) agriculture under colonial pressure: population rose, land didn’t. The response wasn’t mechanisation or collapse.

It was finer and finer terracing, more and more hands per hectare — yield per hectare crept up, yield per hour of labour fell.

The pattern, not the paddy

Once you have the mechanism, it shows up everywhere this semester goes looking for it:

  • resumes and unpaid internships (week 4)
  • workplace presenteeism (week 5)
  • social feeds and the content treadmill (week 7)
  • this course’s own syllabus (week 8)

Try harder. Get less.

Welcome to Involution.

Where the semester goes

Twelve weeks, one mechanism, escalating: origin story → workplace → platforms → the course turning the method on itself → exit strategies → comparative case studies → an intervention you design and defend.
